Homework due Thurs. 8/22 or Fri. 8/23

NOTE: Bring your copy of "Rafaela Who Drinks Coconut and Papaya Juice on Tuesdays" to our next class.

Assignment 1 of 2:
Add to your annotations for Sandra Cisneros' "Rafaela Who Drinks Coconut and Papaya Juice on Tuesdays" using the Annotations Bingo handout you were given in class.  If done correctly, you should have 23 annotations for this text.

**You will have 10 minutes at the start of class to finish up these annotations.**

How do you get 23 different annotations?
You should have an annotation for every square on the bingo board (minus the "free space" and extra "main idea sentence about freedom").

Can I have less than 23 annotations but still get full credit?
Yes.  Some annotations can be combined into one.  For example, if you found a "reference in the text to jealousy" about Rafaela's husband, that could potentially cover the "an inference about Rafaela's husband based on evidence in the text" annotation.

How will this assignment be graded?
You will turn in your annotations for this text.  You will be assigned SIX of the 23 annotations as a grade.  If you have all 6 assigned to your period, you will earn full credit (a "4").  If not, you will receive a "1" for incomplete work.  If all six are not well explained in your annotations, your grade will be lowered (to a "2.5").  If you turn in completed work after the deadline, it will be worth a 2.0 for late credit.

Assignment 2 of 2:
If you did not complete and/or turn the following assignments, you must do so as soon as possible so you don't lose too much credit:

-Signed syllabus pages
-Goal Sheets
-Annotations for Joanne B. Ciulla's "The Work Ethic, in a Modern Guise" (specifically the main idea sentences)
-Answers to the reading questions for Ciulla's "The Work Ethic, in a Modern Guise" + main idea sentence for the entire text

Homework due Wed. 8/21

NOTE: Bring your copy of the summer assignment reading materials to our next class.

Assignment 1 of 4:
Main idea sentences for paragraphs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-6, 7, 8, 9-12, and 13-15 should be part of your annotations for Joanne B. Ciulla's "The Work Ethic, in a Modern Guise".  If not, make sure you update your annotations.

Assignment 2 of 4:
In your notebook, underneath your answers to reading questions #1-5 for Joanne B. Ciulla's "The Work Ethic, in a Modern Guise", please write out a one-sentence main idea for the ENTIRE text.

Consider using one of the following sentence frames:

When students leave college, they do not ____________, and must therefore learn to __________ in order to become successful new employees.

Students must learn to __________ so they can avoid ___________.

While many students leave college thinking _______, successful students are those who learn to _________ by __________.

Assignment 3 of 4:
Read and annotate Sandra Cisneros' "Rafaela Who Drinks Coconut and Papaya Juice on Tuesdays" using the six annotation strategies we brainstormed in class.  Bring your annotated copy of this text to class Wednesday.

NOTE: You do NOT need to read/annotate "Papa Who Wakes Up Tired in the Dark".

Assignment 4 of 4:

Assignment 1 of 4:
Make sure you annotate the rest of Joanne B. Ciulla's "The Work Ethic, in a Modern Guise" from the summer assignment (paragraphs 5-15). Focus on main ideas for paragraphs 8, 9-12, 13-15.

Even if you already annotated this text, you should update your annotations based on our discussion in your period.  Make sure you cover all six actions we said to take when annotating unfamiliar texts.

Assignment 2 of 4:
Answer reading questions #3-5 for Joanne B. Ciulla's "The Work Ethic, in a Modern Guise" in your notebook.  You will need to turn this in at the end of the next class, so make sure it is not attached to any of your notes from Wednesday.

Make sure you write your answers in complete sentences.  It would be a good idea to make the question part of your answer.  The two questions you need to answer are reproduced below in case you have misplaced your copy of the text.

3.     Read the subsection called “Entitled to a Do-Over”: Describe the first problem the author sees in today’s students’ work ethic, using your own words. 4.     Read the subsection called “Clock-Punching”: Describe the second problem the author sees in today’s students’ work ethic, using your own words. Make sure you write your answers in complete sentences.  It would be a good idea to make the question part of your answer.  The two questions you need to answer are reproduced below in case you have misplaced your copy of the text.
