Homework due Tuesday 11/12 + Wednesday 11/13

NOTE: Please bring your Pre-AP readers all of next week.
NOTE: Odd periods will meet Tuesday 11/12.  Even periods will meet Wednesday 11/13.

Assignment 1 of 4:
Complete the following slides for your Google Slides Project over the long weekend:

Slide 1: Remove the word "template" from the title.  Add the following info: both partners' names, the slides you are responsible for, the date and the period

Slide 2: Add a ONE-SENTENCE theme for both texts.  It should be a message or lesson about impulse that is true for BOTH texts.

Slide 3: Select a strong quote (no more than 1-2 sentences in a paragraph or 1-3 lines of a poem) that proves the pheasants are vulnerable (defenseless, unprotected, helpless).  Cite it properly.  Explain how specific words and/or phrases in the quote prove the birds are vulnerable.

Slide 6: Select a strong quote (no more than 1-3 lines of a poem) that proves the eggs are vulnerable (defenseless, unprotected, helpless).  Cite it properly.  Explain how specific words and/or phrases in the quote prove the eggs are vulnerable.

NOTE: Not having these slides completed before Tuesday and Wednesday's period will make more work for you in the next class AND jeopardize your ability to turn in your project on time.

Assignment 2 of 4:
Complete late Found Poems for "What Happened During the Ice Storm".

**NOTE: In case you do not want other students to know which poem is yours on the board, write your heading on the reflection paragraph page, which will be covered by your final draft.

Turn in the following assignments (stapled in this order):
1)  Typed final draft of the poem + hand-drawn illustration
2)  Typed reflection paragraph (Five sentences explaining your word choice and   why you structured the poem the way you did ... see instructions on the handout)
3)  The assignment description handout with the rubric on the backside

Assignment 3 of 4 (ongoing):
Type a late final draft of "Paragraph A" and have a printed hardcopy ready to turn in as soon as possible.  If you did not turn in this paragraph, it completely cancels out the benefits of turning in Paragraph B.  If you turned neither of these in, your grade likely fell at least one grade level.  You do not have time left in the semester to be playing these games with your grade.  Fix yourselves.

Final Deadline: November 15th

Assignments to turn in on Wednesday (staple in this order):
Typed Final Draft (Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced)
Rough Draft (typed or handwritten)

Complete and type up late "Lamb to the Slaughter" CEL paragraphs on irony and submit them to Google Classroom if they were not done so during Wednesday's period.

Remember, there should be TWO sentences of explanation (one coming after the "This demonstrates irony because ...").  This second sentence of explanation should prove how you know that other characters do not have the same knowledge as the reader (e.g., a specific keyword or key phrase).

Homework due Wednesday 10/9

NOTE: Bring your Pre-AP reader to Wednesday's class.

Assignment 1 of 4:
Complete the Single Paragraph Outline handout for your paragraph on irony in "Lamb to the Slaughter".

Tips to Remember As You Write:
*Your claim sentence should prove how dramatic irony shows up in the story.  Think about the definition of dramatic irony we went over in class.
*Quotes should be in quotation marks.  Citations (by paragraph number) should be after the quote but before the period in parentheses.  See examples below.
*Replace the "This demonstrates irony because ..." sentences with the sentences you wrote out in Part 6 of your graphic organizer.

How to write out quotes properly with citations:
Ex. "This is how you quote properly" (paragraph 32).

If the quote ends with exclamation points or question marks you leave them alone and add a period after the citation.  All other punctuation is removed (e.g., commas, semicolons, dashes, colons).
Ex.  "This is how you quote properly!" (paragraph 32).
Ex. "Is this how you quote properly?" (paragraph 32).

Never combine two speakers into one quote.  In other words, quotes should only have one speaker.  If you want to include both, paraphrase the less important speech and quote the more important one.
Ex.  Belinda Bruin argues with Tommy Trojan in "Which School is Better?" that UCLA was a better school than USC.  In response, Tommy Trojan states, "Actually, USC outperforms UCLA in several areas of study, such as in cinematic arts, business, engineering, music education, pharmacy and dentistry" (paragraph 33).

Assignment 2 of 4:
Type of a rough draft of your paragraph in Google Docs.  Remember to add a SECOND sentence of explanation to come after the first sentence of explanation on the outline (the "This demonstrates irony because ..." sentence).

This second sentence of explanation should prove how you know that other characters do not have the same knowledge as the reader.

Assignment 3 of 4:
Finish Parts 5 and 6 of the graphic organizer for "Lamb to the Slaughter" if not already done.

For Part 6, take the examples of dramatic irony you've found and form them into a sentence beginning with a subordinating conjunction (e.g., while, even though, despite).  This sentence should contrast what readers know and what other characters do not.

Ex.  While detectives think _____, readers know _____.
Ex.  Even though readers _______, the grocer ______.
Ex.  Despite detectives saying ______, readers should already _____.
