Homework due Monday the 7th/Tuesday the 8th

Assignment 1 of 5

Answer the following questions on Act 1 scene 1 in your notebook or on a separate sheet of paper:

QUESTION 1: Lines 1-54 (1-73 on Pearson)

Why does Shakespeare start the play with the servants’ quarrel? What point is he trying to make?

QUESTION 2: Lines 54-94 (74-113 on Pearson)

How do the citizens of Verona feel about all the fighting?

QUESTION 3: Lines 54-94 (74-113 on Pearson)

Compare/Contrast Benvolio and Tybalt’s different reactions to the fighting by referring to specific words they use—what does this say about their personalities?

QUESTION 4: Lines 80-6 (Lines 99-105 in Pearson)

Why is the Prince so angry with the Montagues and Capulets? How do you know? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

Assignment 2 of 5

Finish half a page of annotations for scene 1.

Assignment 3 of 5

Write 3-5 sentences summarizing scene 1 in your copy of the R+J timeline.  Once we finish reading Act 1, I will expect to see summaries for scenes 1, 3 and 5.  It would be wise to write your summary of scene 1 now, though, while it is fresh in your mind.

Assignment 4 of 5

Add a quote to your quote log on the nature of love from scene 1.

Assignment 5 of 5

Add words to your glossary from scene 1.

Homework due Thursday the 3rd/Friday the 4th

Assignment 1 of 3

Bring your copy of the text (iPad or textbook) to our next class.

Assignment 2 of 3

On a separate sheet of paper or on the back of the handout with the prologue to Act 1, complete a CEL paragraph (5 sentences minimum) responding to the following prompt:

Based on the language he uses in the prologue to Act 1, how does Shakespeare want the audience to feel about the tragic events in Romeo and Juliet?

**Your claim should be one sentence that answers this prompt in your own
         words(i.e., no quotes).
**Your evidence should come in the form of 2+ quotes from the prologue
**Your quotes should be in quotation marks and should be cited the way we
discussed in class. If you quote more than one line at a time, use a "/" to
indicate where one line ends and another begins.
**Your paragraph should include interpretations/paraphrases of the quotes
and/or definitions of key words (e.g., "civil" in line 4).
**Your paragraph should include analysis of how the meaning of the words
         Shakespeare uses supports your argument.

Assignment 3 of 3

Prepare your glossary and your quotes logs (one for quotes on the nature of love, the other for quotes on the individual vs. society) before coming to class. This will allow you to add to them more easily as we read.

Homework due Wednesday the 2nd

Assignment 1 of 4
Bring R+J to our next class, whether in your textbook or in the iPad (the Pearson app for ELA should include the text under Unit 2).

Assignment 2 of 4
Set up the following ongoing assignments in preparation for when we start reading Act 1 on Wednesday: your Shakespeare glossary and your two quotes logs (one for quotes on the nature of love, a separate one for quotes that deal with the individual vs. society).

Suggestion: Set these up as Google docs on your iPad for easiest access.  Otherwise, set aside separate sheets of lined paper for each assignment and commit to bringing these to every class.

Assignment 3 of 4
Paraphrase the prologue to Act 1 using the handout provided in class.  Be sure to look up the underlined words and use these definitions to help you put EACH line into your own words.

Assignment 4 of 4
If you haven't yet finished revising your research papers by Tuesday, you no longer are eligible to receive a 4 due to lateness.  Please finish your revisions no later than Friday March 11th.

If you haven't finished the two Achieve 3000 lessons we have done so far this month ("Women Who Led the Way" and "Is This Reality TV?"), make sure you do so (complete all five steps).  Not doing even one of these articles before grades are due will result in a "0" grade for both.

Homework due Monday the 29th/Tuesday the 1st

Assignment 1 of 5

If you were advised to resubmit your paper due to citation errors, please bring your revised paper back on Monday (odd periods) or Tuesday (even periods) by the end of the day (i.e., before I leave) to preserve full-credit status (excluding students who have not turned in a paper yet).

Papers that are revised but not resubmitted until after Monday/Tuesday will be downgraded to late-credit status and only worth a 2.0 maximum.

Papers with or without citation errors that are received after Friday March 11th will NOT be accepted (even if you originally turned it in on time).

Assignment 2 of 5

We will begin reading Romeo and Juliet next week.  As such, please bring your iPad if it has the English Pearson software loaded onto it.  If it does not or you are not sure, bring your textbook to class ALL of next week.

If even ONE student in class is not where he or she is supposed to be on the iPad when we are reading in class then we will ONLY use the textbook to read the play from that point on.

Assignment 3 of 5

If you have less than a 4 for the final draft of your works cited page, you may revise and resubmit it for a higher grade up to Friday, March 11th.

Assignment 4 of 5

Bring the following to class next week if you must make up your benchmark tests: your iPad (laptops may not be available next week), your iPad charger, your personal earphones/headsets, AND your IRP book.

Assignment 5 of 5

If you have not gotten your second IRP book approved, you must do as soon as possible.

Not having your IRP book starting next week will result in exercises to build "knowledge of language" skills like vocabulary acquisition ... in other words, the same consequences for not bringing your OMAM book last semester.

Homework due Monday the 22nd/Tuesday the 23rd

Notice about research paper grades: If you turned in a hardcopy of the paper on time but see a "0/NP" as your grade, it is because you failed to follow the basic citation rules, even though we went over this countless times prior to the paper's due date (in-text citations are just as necessary as a works cited page, in-text citations must match to at least one of the works cited page entries, in-text citations belong after ALL information that YOU personally did not create, a basic in-text citation format requires  the author's last name and the title of the source in parentheses at the end of the sentence).  These are only warnings at this point and will be removed once you have met with me next week.  If a new draft is not submitted by the week after (the week of Feb. 29th), you will lose full-credit status on the paper.  If these issues are not corrected after this intervention (and/or you do not meet with me about these 0s next week), the consequences for plagiarism discussed earlier in class will apply.

Assignment 1 of 4

Bring the following to class next week: your iPad, your iPad charger, your personal earphones/headsets, AND your IRP book.

Assignment 2 of 4

Paraphrase Sonnet 18 (on the handout you were given in class) in your own words by Wednesday the 24th.  There are 14 lines in a sonnet so the best way to attempt this is to put each of the 14 lines in your own words.

In case you did not pick up the handout, you may click the following link:

Do NOT merely look for a modern translation online.  If this becomes a grade in Pinnacle and you plagiarize any part of it from an online source (or your paraphrase is too close to another student's) then you will be added to Ethics Committee.

You may write this in your notebook in pencil or pen.  Be prepared to turn it in on Wednesday and/or submit it digitally to Turnitin.com.

Assignment 3 of 4

Turn in your final draft of your research paper to Turnitin.com if you have not done so already (class codes are listed in earlier homework posts and on the agenda side of the board in class).  Your hardcopy of your paper will NOT be graded until this comes in, possibly resulting in a "0" grade down the line.

Assignment 4 of 4

If you have not gotten your second IRP book approved, you must do as soon as possible.

Not having your IRP book starting next week will result in exercises to build "knowledge of language" skills like vocabulary acquisition ... in other words, the same consequences for not bringing your OMAM book last semester.

Homework due Wednesday the 24th

Assignment 1 of 4

Paraphrase Sonnet 18 (on the handout you were given in class) in your own words by the end of class on Wednesday the 24th.  There are 14 lines in a sonnet so the best way to attempt this is to put each of the 14 lines in your own words.

You may write this in your notebook in pencil or pen.  Be prepared to turn it in on Wednesday and/or submit it digitally to Turnitin.com.

Assignment 2 of 4

Work on fixing the citation problems in your research paper, if applicable.  You must submit a revised version free of citation issues by Monday Feb. 29th (odd) or Tuesday Mar. 1st (even) to hold on to full-credit status.  Papers received after those days (up to Friday Mar. 11th) will be lowered to half-credit status.  Students who do not address the warning 0s for citation issues within the week will have these 0s become permanent.

Warning 0s result from violating the following citation rules: in-text citations are just as necessary as a works cited page, in-text citations must match to at least one of the works cited page entries, in-text citations belong after ALL information that YOU personally did not create, a basic in-text citation format requires  the author's last name and the title of the source in parentheses at the end of the sentence

Homework due Thursday the 25th/Friday the 26th

Assignment 1 of 5

Bring your iPad, charger and personal headsets (NOT attached to phones) to class for your benchmarks.

Bring your IRP book to class for when you finish benchmarks.

Homework due Thursday the 18th/Friday the 19th

Assignment 1 of 2
Finish at least 10 reflections on the presentations today in class if you have not finished already.

For each reflection, you need to do provide the following:
THREE sentences summarizing the presentation's main points (2 supporting points, one counter-point)
TWO sentences providing feedback (one area of improvement, one area they did well in)
ONE sentence determining whether you found the presenter's argument effective (was it persuasive and well supported?)

Prepare for your oral presentation on your research paper if you haven't gone already.  Think of your presentation as the Cliff's Notes version of your paper.

Assignment 2 of 2

Turn in your final draft of your research paper to Turnitin.com if you have not done so already (class codes are listed in earlier homework posts and on the agenda side of the board in class).  Your hardcopy of your paper will NOT be graded until this comes in, possibly resulting in a "0" grade down the line.

Homework due Tuesday the 16th/Wednesday the 17th

NOTE: Due to the Monday holiday, odd periods will meet Tuesday and even periods Wednesday.

Assignment 1 of 2
Prepare for your oral presentation on your research paper, which will take place during class next week.  Think of your presentation as the Cliff's Notes version of your paper.

See the handout you were given in class for details on what to include in your presentation, how long it should be and what your poster should look like.

You will be required to present even if you are turning your paper in late.

Assignment 2 of 2
Finish the Achieve 3000 lesson (lesson #7) if you did not do so in class.  The article is entitled "Women Who Led the Way" and can be accessed via the link below.  Make sure you're already logged in before you click the link.

Make sure you respond to THIS thought question and NOT the one given by the site:

How did attendees of the Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls and women like Sojourner Truth and Jeanette Rankin advance the cause of women's suffrage?  Present your argument in ONE C-E-L paragraph.

Homework due Tuesday/Wednesday (1/19 - 1/20)

Assignment 1 of 4

Finish the following Achieve 3000 lessons up to the thought question:
"Coral Reefs Need Care"

http://portal.achieve3000.com/kb/lesson/?lid=15401&step=11&c=66&asn=1

Assignment 2 of 4

Read over the assignment description/outline handout for your upcoming Argumentative Research Paper.  Determine what your research topic will be and create a research question for your paper.  Don't worry about making it "perfect" ... just be prepared with one for Tuesday/Wednesday's class.  You may email me drafts of your questions to review if you would like feedback beforehand.

**There is a typo in the "Criteria for Research Notes" section on the first page.  You should have at least THREE sources, not two.

Assignment 3 of 4

Once you have decided on a topic to focus on and written a draft of your research question, find at least ONE source (an online news article, for instance) to bring with you to class Tuesday/Wednesday (this can be a link bookmarked on your iPad or a printout of the source itself).

Assignment 4 of 4

Get your second IRP book approved and submit your IRP approval sheet by the end of January (Friday 1/29).  Any approval sheets after this deadline will be worth half credit only.

When getting approval for your book, be prepared to show me the book's lexile level (say, on lexile.com) and provide me with the book's author and title.  There is space on the approval sheet to write this information down.

If the book does not have a lexile level listed online, you will need to bring the book in to me for review.

Homework due Thursday the 11th/Friday the 12th

Assignment 1 of 5

Finish your research paper and be ready to turn it in before walking into class stapled in the order below:

Cover Page (optional)
Research Paper, final draft
Works Cited page, final draft
Research Paper, rough draft
Peer-Editing Checklist/Feedback Form
Research Notes (organized by source, NOT by content)
Outline/Rubric

Formatting requirements for each are listed on the first page of the outline.

Before you turn it in, HAVE YOU CITED EVERYTHING PROPERLY???
**Don't just cite direct quotes (ex. "...")---All paraphrases need to be cited, too!!!
**Check one last time that you have a matching number of unique in-text/parenthetical citations (3 sources = 3 unique in-text citations, minimum) and entries in your works cited page
**Improperly formatted or missing citations will result in a "1" under "Conventions" on the rubric at best and Ethics Committee at worst.

List the type of citation you're doing above the actual citation (e.g., general website, online magazine article, video from YouTube, personal interview, etc.).

Assignment 1 of 3
Bring your completed research notes to class tomorrow.  I will be inputting them as a grade for the first five weeks.  Remember that you should have 1.5-2 printed pages of research from at least 3 different sources.  The breakdown will be as follows:

4 - notes are complete (3+ sources and 2 full printed pages when/if typed out)
3 - notes are mostly complete but the quality is lacking (too little information from each source; not 2 full pages when typed out)
2 - notes are only halfway complete (missing 1 source, missing enough information to fill 1.5 printed pages fully, missing counter-argument source)
1 - notes mostly incomplete (missing 2+ sources, notes fill less than 1 full printed page, missing counter-argument source)
