Homework due Wednesday, January 11th, 2017

Assignment 1 of 3

You should have received a handout from Ms. Ng connected to Achieve 3000.  Over the break, please do all five steps for one article of your choice.  Record the title of the article, the date the last step was completed, and have your parent sign it.  This should be submitted/completed no later than Sunday January 8th.

Since you will be picking the article, please follow the instructions for the thought question provided.

In case you lose your copy, a digital one will be uploaded to this website.

Assignment 2 of 3
Prepare for the research paper you will be writing when you return from winter break by listing at least THREE topics you would be willing to research for this paper.

Write these topics on an index card and bring the card with you to our first class back from break.  I'll be collecting it at the door.

When choosing topics, keep in mind that they should be school appropriate (no “every student should smoke weed” topics). Furthermore, you should be able to defend your chosen topic with fact-based research (not opinions).

Email me if you have questions or want to run topic ideas by me.

Assignment 3 of 3
Use the weeks off from school to start your search for your second IRP book. The criteria for choosing a book are the same, as is the assignment itself. When determining if the book meets your lexile level, use the lexile score you received on your last test (the LevelSet test in December).

Book selection should be complete no later than Tuesday February 28th. Yes, that is a while from now, but this way you have more time to avoid problems later on.

The IRP Criteria are listed in the digital file uploaded to this website on October 20, 2016.

The AP list of books to choose from is uploaded to this website.

Email me for a digital copy of the IRP approval sheet if you lose the one you received in class.

Homework due Friday the 16th

Assignment 1 of 1

Please bring your iPad, your agenda and at least one sheet of paper to class.

NOTE: If you have a borderline grade (1.80 up to a 1.99) you may want to bring your Of Mice and Men book as well as your notebook so that you can be prepared to fix any assignments that might help your grade go up.

Homework due the day of your final

Assignment 1 of 2
Study for your multiple-choice portion of the final.  You will need to answer 55 multiple-choice questions covering all six sections of Of Mice and Men.  You want to budget about 55 minutes for this portion of the final (1 minute per question).

You will have two extra credit questions for this part of the final.  One will be about OMAM, the other will be about an earlier unit.

Assignment 2 of 2
Study for your the second CEL paragraph you need to write for your final. There were two prompts I showed you last week ... pick ONE of those prompts to answer and copy down TWO quotes onto the green index card I gave you in class Monday.

Make sure you have correct citations for BOTH of your quotes and make sure you copy the quote exactly as it is written.

If you do not remember the prompts you were given for the final, or what section, email me privately before 7 p.m. so I can send them via email.  If you did not get an index card or lost yours, please see me before your final begins.  If you lost the one I gave you, I do have extras.

Write your name on the index card before you line up for class!  Not writing your name on the index card can result in you not being allowed to use it.

Homework due Monday the 12th (all classes)

Assignment 1 of 3
Study for the first CEL paragraph you will need to write during class for your final.  You will all get the same prompt, but will need to answer it based on the section your period was given.

P1= Section 3
P2= Section 2
P4= Section 4
P5= Section 1
P6= Section 5

Prompt:
Select ONE theme from Of Mice and Men that is best represented in the section your period was given.  Using TWO well-chosen quotes, prove to the reader that what happens in this section of the novella spotlights (emphasizes) this theme you’ve selected.
  1. Claim: identify author, title and section of the novella + clarify the theme you see in the section
  2. Set up your first piece of evidence by summarizing what the reader will need to know to understand it (like, what happened right before the dialogue/actions in the quote).
  3. Your first quote should clearly illustrate the theme. It should be no more than a few sentences and should be able to stand on its own.
  4. Explain how your first quote proves a connection to the theme: match words from this quote to words/ideas you used to describe the theme.
  5. Use transition words/phrases to link your first quote to your next.
  6. Your second quote should clearly illustrate the theme. It should be no more than a few sentences and should be able to stand on its own.
  7. Explain how this second quote proves a similarly strong connection to the theme: match words from this quote to words/ideas you used to describe the theme.

Assignment 2 of 3
Bring your double-entry journals to class and add the two quotes you plan on using for the prompt above to the document.  If you would like to use your double-entry journal on Monday's final, it must be printed out (if it is on your iPad) or ripped out of your notebook (if it is handwritten) ... otherwise, you won't get to use it.

Be ready to turn it in at the door, so it can be checked.
If you do not bring your double-entry journal to class Monday or you have not completed it, your grade for your Unit 3 notebook assignments will go down to a 1.

Assignment 3 of 3
Bring your copy of Of Mice and Men to school so that you can study it before you take the final during class.

Otherwise, all you will need to bring for class on Monday is: one sheet of lined paper and something to write with.
