If you did not pass your Narrative Elements Quiz you may retake it after school on Tuesday or Thursday from 3:45 to 4:45 (please let me know ahead of time if you plan to retake this quiz before mandatory tutoring starts).  

 

You may use your notes on retakes because now you are only eligible for a 2.0 grade maximum.

If you were not able to do so in class, you must finish your rough draft at home and get someone to peer edit it for you using the handout distributed in class.

 

For full credit on your peer editing form, you must:

-Write your name and the name of your peer editor

-Check that your peer editor graded you for each category (A~E).

-Check that your peer editor wrote 1+ sentence explaining their grades for A~E

 

Note on how to peer edit someone's work using this form:

 

A: Claim/Topic Sentence -->  Does this story have a clear beginning, middle and end?

B: Evidence/Examples -->  Does this writer use enough detail to make the reader feel fully involved in the story?

C: Link/Analysis/Interpretation -->  Does the story build towards a final attempt to solve the problem?  In other words, does the conflict get bigger before being solved?

D: Concluding Sentence -->  Does the writer end with a lesson he or she learned from the experience?  Does the lesson make sense for the story?

E: Grammar and Language Conventions -->  Does the writer make several careless typos or errors in spelling, capitalization and sentence construction?

1) What is Marjane’s internal conflict and how does the author set up this conflict on the first page? Be sure to cite specific words/a specific sentence from page 35.

 

2) Why do you think Marjane makes so many changes to her look?  Explain your thinking using evidence from the images and text on page 36.

 

3) Describe two ways the author introduces conflict between Marjane and her friends on page 37.  Support your thinking with quotes from this page.

 

4) What does Marjane mean when she says, “I didn’t like to smoke, but I did it out of solidarity” (page 38)?  (Make an inference about why she pretends to smoke).

 

5) Why does Marjane say she is “ashamed” to talk to her parents?  Use evidence from page 39 to support your thinking.

 

6) Describe one way Marjane tries to distance herself from her culture on page 40, and how it makes her feel.  Use evidence from this page to make a connection to her internal conflict.

 

7) Describe one way Marjane does not stay “true to herself” on page 41 and why.  Use the text to support your answer.

 

8) Based on the girls’ comments on page 42, how have Marjane’s attempts to solve her external conflict only made the conflict worse?

 

9)How does Marjane solve both her internal and external conflicts on page 43?  Use evidence from this page to prove she has overcome both.

 

Add annotations to your copy of "The Vegetable" by Marjane Satrapi.  You should have 3 notes minimum per page.

 

Consider annotating the following:

-notes on what kind of person Marjane is

-notes on evidence of her external and internal conflicts

-notes on where one stage of the plot ends and another begins

 

 

Answer the question that was assigned to your group (email me if you've forgotten who your group is or what question you were assigned).  Write your answer on a new sheet in your notebook that can be torn out and turned in later.  Answers should be in complete sentences.  You do not need to write out the question as long as the question is part of your answer.
