Make sure the following tasks on your "The First Day" graphic organizer are done by Wednesday:
 
1)  Find the four "This is my mother" sentences in the text and write them out in the chart on the first page.
2)  Based on the four "This is my mother" sentences, come up with 2-4 strong adjectives to describe the mother in each sentence.  To be clear, at least TWO of your adjectives must be unique (no repeats).
3)  Add these adjectives to the sentence frame on the back of the graphic organizer.  Of the four spaces, at least TWO must be filled in (the first and last).

Homework due Wednesday 9/11

Assignment 1 of 5:
Finish a TYPED final draft of your narrative.  It should be double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font.  Include the proper assignment heading and create a title for your narrative.
 
Remember that if you are unable to print your narrative at home you can ask the front office to print it for you.  Email or share your document with [email protected] by 7 a.m. this Wednesday morning to ensure it is ready for you when you get to school.
 
 
Assignment 2 of 5:
If you were not able to do so in class, you must finish your rough draft at home and get someone to peer edit it for you using the handout distributed in class.
 
For full credit on your peer editing form, you must:
-Write your name and the name of your peer editor
-Check that your peer editor graded you for each category (A~E).
-Check that your peer editor wrote 1+ sentence explaining their grades for A~E
 
Note on how to peer edit someone's work using this form:
 
A: Claim/Topic Sentence -->  Does this story have a clear beginning, middle and end?
B: Evidence/Examples -->  Does this writer use enough detail to make the reader feel fully involved in the story?
C: Link/Analysis/Interpretation -->  Does the story build towards a final attempt to solve the problem?  In other words, does the conflict get bigger before being solved?
D: Concluding Sentence -->  Does the writer end with a lesson he or she learned from the experience?  Does the lesson make sense for the story?
E: Grammar and Language Conventions -->  Does the writer make several careless typos or errors in spelling, capitalization and sentence construction?

Read over the prompt for your Narrative Writing assignment below:
 
Think about a pivotal moment from your life that helped you discover something about yourself (perhaps an experience that forced you to look more closely at your relationship with your cultural heritage).  How did this moment or experience shape you into the person you are today and/or develop your understanding of the world? 
 
Over the long weekend, think of a specific moment or experience in your life that would help you answer this prompt.  You will need to choose a moment/experience to focus on by the end of your next class.  
 
 
Assignment 2 of 5:
Complete the brainstorming handout for your upcoming Narrative Writing Assignment (it's the handout with the large box in the middle and four smaller boxes underneath).  
 
Directions for the large box in the middle:
Draw out a setting (place) that has special meaning for you (your house, the park where you had your first kiss, etc.).  If you choose a place with many rooms/areas (your house, the mall), illustrate at least two rooms or two areas.
 
Directions for the smaller boxes at the bottom: 
In at least THREE of the four boxes, describe in 1-3 sentences) something important that has happened in this place.  Focus on important events that have directly involved YOU.  If you are doing two rooms in your house, maybe do two descriptions for one room and a third description for the other room.
 
 
Assignment 3 of 5:
Finish the plot diagram for "The Vegetable" so you can turn it in at the start of the next class.  Remember that you should be filling in each box with QUOTES from the text (in quotation marks, properly copied).  Your quotes should ONLY be one sentence long.
