In honor of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), McAfee joined up with the National Cyber Security Alliance at Gertz-Ressler High School in Los Angeles to educate the students on how to be responsible cyber citizens. Guest speakers Nev Schulman (of MTV Catfish fame) and Michelle Dennedy, our own McAfee Chief Privacy Officer, held an open conversation with the students, learning which ways the teens use the internet, and then providing useful guidance and safety tips.

so okay so I'm going to ask what is a question and raise your hand if you'd like to answer what is personal information can anybody Give me a definition or tell me what personal information is guys are shy back here come on up come on up we got someone over here what is personal information birthdate most of all on your first name and last name that's you like the most important information because from what I know if they have that information they can pretty much Robert identity formation for me would be like any family issues I don't have any or anything along that line that's a good the definition to I was going to say your address probably a good one what are your parents names where they work where you go to school your sibling your date of birth so I want to ask Michelle and me Eve what should kids really everyone be mindful of when there are talking about themselves online and sharing personal information Saul start I think the what the one thing that kids really need to understand is I see this on Facebook sees check-ins please checking in please stop checking in I don't check in and tell people I'm away from my family and that my kids are without me I don't want my husband telling people that he's check when I want to be on holiday going Luke I'm at the beach taking a selfie here's my house go get it for you guys I want to make sure you understand what is it about every we call it situational awareness in cyber-security what is going on in your situation and what artifact of information about you should be used against you so your location your full name your address you don't need to give your birthday to most people almost no one needs social security number and usually your parents know what you're doing when you're giving that out so think about the situation you're in has it changes all the time the person you are at Sunday make sure your Saturday Services is different than the person you are here when you are part of Puma Nation so think about who you are what you're sharing where are you and so your data that you're going to share is going to be limited to that context  yeah yeah I mean that's all totally true I don't check in I also disable the geotag function from my my iPhone cuz I don't know if you know this but when you take a picture in iPhoto or if you post off of Instagram and you say where you are and you sort of look fine the location and you put it there like that photo then carries with it a tag so even if you email that picture to someone they turn then uploaded into their phone and look to see where it was taken so just be careful if you know firstly can get you in trouble if you tell it like if you were to send make sure to your mom and be like I am staying at my friend's house tonight and then she actually looked at like the geotag of where you took it and it was not your friend's house it can get you busted but said there's no way your mom is smart well accepted this is your mom no but seriously I've seen so many so many cases on the show where aside from the two people who are on the show there's always is other person usually whose pictures got used and it's so interesting because you think like I have my Facebook profile I'm just being play I'm not lying all my friends are my friends so what's the big deal but the truth is there are people who might be your friends on Facebook but who are taking your pictures and using them to create a whole profile and it and I've seen it now on you guys remember well for most recently with bow wow so this might seem silly but  he's a public figure so it doesn't really work when he tell the difference story in the first season we had a girl just pretending to be Kari Ann Peniche I don't know if you know she is probably young but she was Miss Teen USA and then she was a Playboy bunny and then she was on Celebrity Rehab anyway some some girl yeah so some girl took her pictures and created a Facebook page for her and it was so popular because she was so active on it she accumulated more fans than the real Kari Ann Peniche and so people just figured like LOL I want to follow Carrie Ann they type your name in the first page thumbs up has the most fans and they just assumed that was her and so what's crazy is that even the real Carrie Anne's manager was friends with the profile and so the profile was getting like requests and business offers to come and do things like this caps not talking about internet security talking about other things and she wasn't getting them because someone had you know someone pretending to be her was getting them instead so you don't know how people are going to use your pictures it could be for a weird fan page could be for a whole another profile and a could do real harm using your image and it could get you in trouble and I've seen that also on the show where principal called another principle because he kid from that school was messing with some kid from his school but it was really just some other person using a picture of that gets you know it's there's a lot of things that can happen so really just be smart with the people I really friends with a even your photo on Facebook and all the ones that you make private and public you know it's not hard to download them and start a new fake person and sorry I just be smart with who you're who you share your photos with and and all of your information
