Math Department Puzzle #1:

A rock weighing 40 pounds is broken into 4 pieces such that the weights (in pounds) of the 4 piece are whole numbers.  It is possible to use some or all of the 4 pieces on a balance to determine the weight of an object (40 pounds or less) whose weight is also a whole number of pounds. What should be the weights of the 4 pieces?
